China visa-free entry and Dunhuang

Fifty nationalities can now fly into China and travel to Dunhuang for up to 30 days without a visa. Americans cannot, and the 240-hour transit rule stops short of Gansu.

China's unilateral visa-free policy turned Dunhuang into an easy add-on for many Europeans, Australians and, since February 2026, British and Canadian travellers. The rules are simple once you know which list you are on. The trouble is that there are two lists, and only one of them reaches Gansu.

This post reflects the official notices as of 28 October 2026. Rules change by announcement, so check the Chinese embassy page for your country before you book flights.

The quick answer

Ordinary passport holders from 48 countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and most of the EU, can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days until 24:00 on 31 December 2026 and travel anywhere in the mainland, Dunhuang included. Russia's version runs to 31 December 2027 and Brunei's has no end date. US citizens are not covered. The 240-hour visa-free transit rule does not include Gansu, so it cannot get you to Dunhuang.

Who can visit Dunhuang without a visa in 2026?

Ordinary passport holders from the 50 countries on China's unilateral visa-free list, for up to 30 days. For 48 of them the policy runs to 31 December 2026.

The Chinese consulate in San Francisco keeps the official FAQ on the unilateral visa-free policy (updated 2026). It names 50 countries whose ordinary passport holders may come for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges or transit for up to 30 days, and gives three end dates: none for Brunei, 31 December 2027 for Russia, 31 December 2026 for the other 48.

The list grew in steps. The November 2025 extension notice carried 45 countries to the end of 2026, Sweden joined from 10 November 2025, and the UK and Canada from 00:00 on 17 February 2026 (Consulate General in Toronto). Russia's extension to 2027 was announced by the Foreign Ministry on 20 May 2026.

How does the 30-day visa-free stay work for a Dunhuang trip?

The 30 days count from the day after you arrive. You can enter at any port open to foreigners and travel anywhere in the mainland, including Gansu.

The consulate FAQ is specific. The stay "自入境次日起计算": it starts counting the day after entry, for 30 calendar days in a row. Any sea, land or air port open to foreigners works, and you can fly in from any country, not only your own. There is no cap on how many times you use it.

Border officers check that your purpose fits the list. The FAQ suggests carrying proof such as a return ticket and hotel bookings. Work, study and journalism need a visa. If you want more than 30 days, get a visa before you travel; a stay can only be extended at a local exit-entry office for a sound reason after arrival.

Dunhuang has its own airport, and flights via Lanzhou, Beijing or Shanghai make it a 30-day trip with room to spare. A three-day stop fits easily, and our itinerary guide sets out how to use it.

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Dunhuang?

Yes. The United States is not on the 30-day visa-free list, and the 240-hour transit rule does not cover Gansu. Americans need a visa for Dunhuang.

None of the official notices names the United States among the 30-day countries. The US does appear on the National Immigration Administration's list of 240-hour transit nationalities, which is where the confusion starts. That rule only works inside its permitted areas, and Dunhuang is outside them (next section).

For a tourist trip that includes Dunhuang, apply for a regular tourist visa (type L) through the Chinese visa service for your area before you fly. The same applies to any nationality that is not on the 30-day list.

Does the 240-hour visa-free transit cover Gansu and Dunhuang?

No. The 240-hour rule covers 65 ports in 24 provinces, and Gansu is not one of them. A transit passenger cannot legally travel to Dunhuang on it.

The National Immigration Administration's announcement of November 2025 raised the number of entry ports to 65, and its appendix lists each port with its permitted stay area. No port in Gansu appears; the closest permitted area is Shaanxi province, around Xi'an. The NIA's visa-free transit page (August 2026) still gives 57 countries, 65 ports and 24 provinces.

The rule itself: nationals of the 57 countries, with an onward ticket to a third country or region and a confirmed date, can stay up to 240 hours (10 days) and move between the permitted areas. Flying from a permitted area into Dunhuang breaks it.

What happens to visa-free entry after 31 December 2026?

Nothing has been announced for the 48 countries yet. Last year's extension was published in early November.

As of 28 October 2026 there is no notice extending the 30-day policy past 24:00 on 31 December 2026, apart from Russia. The current extension notices are dated 4 November 2025, so the next decision could land any week. We will update this post when it does.

Plan around the date you have. A trip that starts after 31 December needs either a new notice or a visa. The consulate FAQ does not say what happens to a stay that begins in December and runs into January; if yours does, ask the embassy in writing or get the visa. Winter in Dunhuang is cheap at the gates, and Mogao's low-season ticket starts on 1 December.

Which passport do you use for Mogao and tour bookings?

The one you enter China with. Mogao tickets are real-name, and most Dunhuang tour listings ask for the passport name, number and expiry at booking.

Mogao checks the passport against the booking at the Digital Exhibition Center. Dual nationals should book with the passport they used at immigration. Several listings on this site require full passport details at checkout, among them the Mogao half-day tour, the Mogao and theatre day and the 8-day Silk Road trip.

Get the passport details right before the operator books your caves: the name and number on the ticket have to match the passport you show. Tour or do-it-yourself explains what the operator does with your details.
