Dunhuang in winter 2026-27

Dunhuang in January is cold, dry and nearly empty, with blue skies most days. The sites stay open, the tickets get cheaper, and the dunes sometimes wear a little snow.

Most people visit Dunhuang between May and October. Winter is the other Dunhuang: freezing mornings, almost no rain, low prices and short queues, with one busy week around the Chinese New Year.

Here is what December to February 2026-27 looks like, from the climate numbers to the opening hours, the sunrise you will be chasing on the dunes, and how to get there in the low season. Facts as of 28 October 2026.

The quick answer

Expect daytime highs around 0 to 6 °C and nights from -9 to -14 °C from December to February, with about 1 mm of precipitation a month. Mogao opens 09:00 to 17:30 from 1 December, Mingsha Shan opens early, and the main sites charge low-season or half-price tickets until 31 March 2027. Sunrise at the dunes is around 09:00. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027; book that week early.

How cold is Dunhuang in December, January and February?

January is coldest: an average high of -0.8 °C and an average low of -14.2 °C. February warms to 6.0 °C by day. It almost never rains or snows much.

The numbers below are the China Meteorological Administration's 1991-2020 normals for the Dunhuang station, as tabulated in the Dunhuang climate table. The desert drives big swings: a sunny 5 °C afternoon can follow a -12 °C morning. The record low for December is -30.5 °C.

Dry air makes the cold easier to take than the numbers suggest, and the sun is out most days, with over 200 hours of sunshine a month. Wind is the thing to dress for on the dune ridges and at Yumen Pass. Bring a hat, gloves and a layer that blocks it.

Which Dunhuang sites are open in winter, and when?

All the main ones. Mogao runs 09:00 to 17:30 with sales until 15:00, Mingsha Shan opened at 07:30 last winter, and the Gobi sites stay open at half price.

Dunhuang's 2026-27 winter package runs from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027. It puts Mogao, Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Lake, the Yangguan and Yumen Pass area, the Yadan geopark, the Xuanquanzhi ruins and the Dunhuang film-set old town on low-season prices, with half-price tickets at all of them except Mogao and the old town (Gansu Traffic Radio). Free parking at the city-run sites, jujube tea and a lantern festival come with it.

The Gobi day is the one to plan carefully. The private Yumen Pass and Yadan tour spends most of its 6 to 8 hours driving, and at Yadan the light goes early. The Yadan jeep trip warns it can be cancelled in bad weather. Our Yumen Pass and Yadan guide has the distances.

What time is sunrise at Mingsha Shan in winter?

About 08:45 to 09:05 Beijing time from December to early February, with sunset between 18:15 and 19:05.

All of China runs on Beijing time, and Dunhuang sits far to the west, so winter mornings start late. The times below come from the sunrise-sunset.org calculation for Mingsha Shan (40.09° N, 94.67° E). Civil twilight, when the dunes first glow, starts about 30 minutes before sunrise.

With the gates opening at 07:30, you can climb in the dark, sit on the ridge and wait. It is cold up there before the sun. Take the climb slowly and carry something warm to drink. If you prefer sunset, plan the dunes for the afternoon after a morning at Mogao; at 18:20 in December you still get back to town for dinner.

Can you fly or take the train to Dunhuang in winter?

Yes. Dunhuang's airport runs a winter schedule from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027 with about 168 flights a week, and the high-speed line stops at Liuyuan.

China's 2026-27 winter-spring flight season runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027 (Guangming Daily). Gansu's winter-season figures put Dunhuang Mogao airport at about 168 weekly flights for the season, 10.5% more than the year before, with new routes to Guangzhou and a Chengdu to Dunhuang to Turpan service (Sohu, 25 October 2026). Lanzhou is the usual connection.

By rail, high-speed trains on the Lanzhou to Xinjiang line stop at Liuyuan, about two hours by road from Dunhuang, and Dunhuang's own station takes conventional trains. Check the official 12306 schedule for your dates. The 3-day private tour includes an airport pickup at the arrival hall.

When is Chinese New Year 2027, and how busy does Dunhuang get?

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 and the Lantern Festival on 20 February. The holiday week is the one busy patch of the winter.

The Hong Kong government's 2027 general holidays list confirms Lunar New Year's Day on 6 February 2027. Mainland China's official 2027 holiday dates had not been published as of 28 October 2026; last year the State Council announced them in early November. Expect domestic travel to peak in the days around the 6th.

Dunhuang leans into it. The 2026-27 programme lists a lantern festival, intangible heritage shows, a shehuo folk parade contest and New Year's Eve blessings (Xinhua). Over the 2026 Spring Festival Mingsha Shan added folk performances and daily dances. Fun to see. Book Mogao and your hotel as soon as you fix dates for that week, and go to Mingsha Shan at opening time.
