A private Mogao and Crescent Lake day

A private guide and driver take you to the Mogao Caves in the morning, then to the Mingsha Shan dunes and the Crescent Lake, and end the day at the Shazhou night market. Pick it to see the two sights everyone comes to Dunhuang for in one day, with the choice of paying for the guide and car only.

Private Day Tour: Mogao Caves & Crescent Lake

About this experience

China Travel Service sells this as one listing with three options, and that matters more than anything else on the page. With Tour Guide Only gets you a guide. Only Transfer & Guide Service adds the private car and hotel pickup. Guide+Transfer+Entry Ticket is the one with the Mogao and Mingsha Shan tickets in it. The $94 from-price is the cheapest option at the largest group size; a couple on the all-inclusive option pays well over that per person, so price your own group before you compare.

The day follows the listing's itinerary: about 3 hours at the Mogao Caves, 25 km from town, an hour on the Mingsha Shan dunes and up to 2 hours at the Crescent Lake about 5 km south of the centre, then the Shazhou night market. At Mogao every visitor holds the same real-name, timed ticket from the official system, checked against the passport, and a site guide from the caves leads you inside. Nobody picks the caves either: the Dunhuang Academy rotates them for conservation (see the official Mogao visitor page). Your own guide handles the booking, the timing and everything around the caves.

Lunch is not included, and neither are the camel ride, sand sliding or the special caves at Mogao, which are sold on site at about CNY 150 to 200 each. Transfers from the airport or railway station cost CNY 200 to 500 per group extra. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes this a safer booking than the all-inclusive SilkRoadTrips day, which includes lunch but cannot be refunded.

What guests say

★★★★★

Had a great tour in Dunhuang in November 2025. Visited Mogao Caves and Singing Dunes. Guide was very kind and knowledgeable. Fully recommended.

An excellent day out. [...] The Mogao Caves are well worth seeing - went round with a guide who worked on the site. Lots of information about the style of art and statues inside the caves. The afternoon was great - completely different. Had a camel ride up the dunes and a walk around the lake.

Tips before you book

  • Check which option you are buying. Only Guide+Transfer+Entry Ticket includes the entry tickets.
  • Book early for July, August, the May Day holiday and Golden Week (1 to 7 October). Regular Mogao tickets (CNY 238: the films and 8 caves) sell out, and a late booking can land you the CNY 100 emergency ticket with 4 caves and no films. Ask which class you hold.
  • Bring the passport you booked with. The Mogao ticket is in your name and is checked at the gate.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the listing suggests: cave walkways in the morning, sand in the afternoon.
  • The listing promises flexible time at each site. On a hot summer day, ask the guide to keep the dunes for late afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Does the private Mogao day include entry tickets?

Only on the Guide+Transfer+Entry Ticket option. The two cheaper options cover the guide, or the guide and the car, and you sort the tickets yourself: Mogao on the official Mogao booking site, and the Mingsha Shan and Crescent Lake ticket (CNY 110 from April to October, CNY 55 from November to March) for the dunes.

Can the guide choose which Mogao caves we see?

No. Every visitor sees the caves the Dunhuang Academy opens that day, and a site guide from the caves leads inside. A private tour adds the planning, the car and a guide for the rest of the day, not extra caves. Special caves cost about CNY 150 to 200 each on site.

Is lunch included?

No, lunch is on the exclusion list. The night market at the end is a good place for dinner at your own cost.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, local time, for a full refund.
