Weather is rarely the problem in Dunhuang. Rain almost never falls, and the sun shines most days of the year. The two things that decide your trip are heat and crowds, and the crowds follow the Chinese school and public holidays more than the weather.
Below: what each month is like, when the Mogao tickets are hardest to get, and what winter really costs and saves.
The quick answer
Go in May, June, September or October: highs of 20 to 33 °C, and room on the Mogao calendar if you book ahead. Avoid 1 to 7 October and the May Day holiday unless your tickets are booked. July and August are hot, around 35 °C, and sell out. From December to March Mogao costs CNY 140 for 10 caves and the dunes CNY 55, with January lows near -15 °C.

When is the best time to visit Dunhuang?

July highs average 35 °C, with strong sun and long evenings: the sun sets around 20:30 to 21:00.
The heat is dry, which helps, but there is no shade on the dunes or at Yadan. Shape the day around it. Mogao in the morning, since the caves are cool and the films are indoors. A rest in town at midday. The dunes after 16:00, when the sand cools and the light turns gold.
Rain is almost never a factor: even July, the wettest month, sees only a couple of wet days. Bring a hat, sunglasses, a scarf against blowing sand, and twice the water you think.

When are the crowds worst in Dunhuang?
From mid-July to late August, over the May Day holiday at the start of May, and in Golden Week, 1 to 7 October.
Mogao's cap of 6,000 A tickets a day is the bottleneck. In July 2026 Sina Travel reported A tickets gone almost every day and the 12,000 emergency tickets filling up as well. The dunes have no such cap, which means more people on the same ridges at sunset.
Coming in a busy week anyway? Book Mogao the day tickets open, 30 days out, take the first slot of the day, and see the dunes at sunrise instead of sunset. The 2027 Spring Festival falls on 6 February and brings domestic travellers in the depth of winter.

Yes, if you dress for it. Mogao drops to CNY 140 for 10 caves, the dunes to CNY 55, and you share the caves with far fewer people.
From 1 December to 31 March the caves open 09:00 to 17:30 and the regular ticket shows two more caves than in summer, for CNY 98 less. January averages a high of about -1 °C and a low of about -15 °C. Snow is rare and light, and the skies stay clear. The Gobi day is cold and short, with sunset around 18:00.
Our take: winter is the best-value season in Dunhuang, as long as you bring proper layers. The details for this season are in the Mogao winter tickets post and Dunhuang in winter.

When are sandstorms in Dunhuang?
Mostly from March to May. A strong storm can close the Mogao Caves or the dunes for the day.
Spring is the windy season: March and April bring dust and the odd sandstorm. When the weather is bad enough, the Mogao Caves close and tickets are refunded, and the dunes may close too. A Chinese travel guide from June 2026 suggested the Dunhuang Museum, which is free, or an indoor show as the backup plan.
If you travel in spring, leave a spare half day in your plan, and keep the bookings refundable. Every tour on our shortlist cancels for free up to 24 hours before, except the all-inclusive Mogao day, which is non-refundable.

What is the best time of day at the dunes and Yadan?
Late afternoon to sunset at both. Early morning at the dunes if you want them quiet.
At Mingsha Shan the summer sun sets around 20:30 to 21:00, and visitors start queuing for camels at about 18:00 to reach the ridge in time. At Yadan, Travel China Guide puts the best light at 20:00 to 21:00 from April to September and 18:00 to 19:00 from October to March. A Yadan sunset means a drive back in the dark of about 2.5 hours, so most day tours leave before it.
More on the dunes in the Mingsha Shan guide.

When should you book Mogao for your dates?
30 days ahead for July, August, May Day and Golden Week; two to three weeks ahead for the rest of April to November; a week ahead in winter.
