Mogao winter tickets 2026-27

From 1 December the Mogao ticket drops from CNY 238 to CNY 140 and you see ten caves instead of eight. Here is what the low season costs, when it opens, and what a winter day out looks like.

Winter is the cheap season at the Mogao Caves, and the one with more to see. The Dunhuang Academy runs two price calendars: a peak season from 1 April to 30 November and a low season from 1 December to 31 March. In the low season the regular ticket costs CNY 140 and adds two caves to the tour.

This post covers the 2026-27 low season as of 28 October 2026, with the prices from the official page, the shorter opening hours, the winter rate at Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Lake, and how tours change when it is cold.

The quick answer

From 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027 a regular Mogao ticket costs CNY 140 (reduced CNY 95) and covers the two films at the Digital Exhibition Center plus ten real caves. The site opens 09:00 to 17:30 and stops selling at 15:00. The emergency ticket (CNY 100, four caves, no films) still exists. Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Lake drop to CNY 55, valid for three days.

How much is a Mogao Caves ticket from 1 December 2026?

CNY 140 for the regular low-season ticket, against CNY 238 in peak season. The reduced rate falls from CNY 148 to CNY 95.

The prices come straight from the Dunhuang Academy visitor page, which splits the year into a peak season (1 April to 30 November) and a low season (1 December to 31 March). Dunhuang's own 2026-27 winter package, which runs from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, confirms that Mogao and the city's other core sites charge their low-season prices (Xinhua, 29 September 2026).

Every ticket is real-name and timed. You book on mgk.org.cn or the official WeChat account with your passport number, and the passport is checked at the door. A tour cannot buy a different ticket from the one you can buy yourself. More on that in our Mogao ticket guide.

What do you see on the low-season Mogao ticket?

Two short films at the Digital Exhibition Center, the shuttle bus to the cliff, and ten real caves with a site guide. Peak season shows eight.

Every visit starts at the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center on the edge of Dunhuang, not at the cliff. Get there 30 minutes before your slot. After the films a shuttle runs about 15 km to the caves, where a Mogao guide takes your group through the doors that are open that day. The academy picks the caves and rotates them for conservation, so nobody can promise you a particular cave, winter or summer.

The extra caves are the real winter bonus. When Dunhuang launched last year's winter package, China Daily reported the open caves going "from 8 to 10" for the cold months, and the official page lists ten for the low season. Phones and cameras stay off inside. Plan on four to five hours door to door.

The 15:00 sales cut-off matters more than the closing time. With a 17:30 close, an afternoon slot leaves little slack for the films, the shuttle and ten caves. Book a morning slot.

Who can buy the reduced CNY 95 ticket?

Children aged 6 to 17, people aged 60 to 69 and full-time students at Chinese universities, with original documents. Younger children and over-70s pay CNY 20.

The Dunhuang Academy visitor page lists the groups. Reduced (CNY 95 in winter): ages 6 to 17, ages 60 to 69, full-time domestic university students. Special reduced (CNY 20): ages 4 and 5, 70 and over, people with disabilities, and several Chinese service groups. Under 4: free. All of it needs the original ID document.

The catch for foreign visitors is the document. Third-party summaries of the same rules tie the discount to a Chinese ID card or a foreign permanent residence card, and the student rate names Chinese universities. On an ordinary foreign passport, plan on paying the full CNY 140 and treat any discount the booking system grants as a bonus.

Do you still need the emergency ticket in winter?

Rarely. The CNY 100 emergency ticket (four caves, no films) is released when regular tickets run out, which is mostly a summer and holiday problem.

In peak season the regular ticket is capped at 6,000 a day, and the emergency class (up to 12,000 a day) catches the overflow. By July both sell out, as Sina Travel reported this summer. Winter is a different place. The one exception is the Chinese New Year holiday, which starts on 6 February 2027: book Mogao for that week as soon as your dates are fixed.

Price-wise, the emergency ticket is a poor deal in winter anyway. For CNY 40 more, the regular ticket gives you the films and six more caves. If a tour listing says "Mogao included", ask which class it books. The listing never says.

What does Mingsha Shan cost in winter?

CNY 55 from November to March, half the CNY 110 summer price, and the ticket is good for three days of entries.

Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Lake run their own calendar. Sina Travel's 2026 guide gives CNY 110 from 1 April to 31 October and CNY 55 from 1 November to 31 March, valid for three consecutive days after the first entry. The 2026-27 winter package keeps the half price at Mingsha Shan, the Yangguan and Yumen Pass area, the Yadan geopark and the Xuanquanzhi ruins, and adds CNY 188 bundles; the Mingsha one covers the ticket, the shuttle, a camel ride and sand boots (Gansu Traffic Radio, 12 October 2026).

Over the 2026 Spring Festival the gates opened 07:30 to 18:00 (ifeng). Camel rides kept running. Sunrise in December and January is around 09:00 Beijing time, so you can be on the ridge before the sun. Our Mingsha Shan guide covers the rides.

What do winter tours in Dunhuang look like?

The same private day tours, built around shorter days: Mogao in the morning after the 09:00 opening, the dunes in the afternoon, sunset around 18:20.

The classic day still works in December. The China Travel Service day pairs three hours at Mogao with Mingsha Shan, the Crescent Lake and the Shazhou night market, from $94 per person. That badge is the price per person for the largest group. Its options run from guide only, to transfer plus guide, to an all-in version with the entry ticket, so check which one you are buying. The China Kongfu Panda day includes the Mogao and Mingsha tickets on its full option, from $100 (check the option you pick); Silk Road Angel Tours' custom day excludes all entrance fees, paid in cash on the day.

Winter tickets cut what you pay at the gates, not the tour price. A couple paying their own tickets saves CNY 196 at Mogao and CNY 110 at Mingsha Shan compared with summer. Dress for the caves too: the walk between them is outside, along the cliff, and January's average high in Dunhuang is below freezing. Our post on Dunhuang in winter has the numbers.
