Booking choice: The private Mogao and Crescent Lake day, from $94 per person. Check dates Tour details
Plenty of visitors do Mogao without a tour and do it well. The site runs one booking system for everyone, starts every visit at the same Digital Exhibition Center, and sends every group into the caves with a guide employed at the site. What a tour sells is the planning, the transfer and a second guide for the hours around the caves.
Below: how the do-it-yourself visit works, what it costs, and the cases where a private day is worth the money.
The quick answer
Doing it yourself costs CNY 238 for the A ticket plus a taxi of roughly CNY 30 to 50 each way, or a CNY 8 bus. Inside the caves a site guide leads every group, tour or not. A private tour from $94 per person adds the booking, hotel pickup and a guide for the context before and after. Pay for one if you can't use WeChat Pay or Alipay, have one day only, or want Mogao and the dunes without arranging anything.

Can you visit the Mogao Caves without a tour?
Yes. Book the timed ticket yourself, get to the Digital Exhibition Center, and the site handles the rest: the films, the shuttle and a cave guide.
One guest who went on a tour said it plainly in a 5-star review: "The tour can be done by yourself as long as you get tickets ahead of time." The two ways compared:
| On your own | Private tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket | You book on mgk.org.cn or WeChat | The operator books it in your name |
| Getting there | Taxi, Didi or the CNY 8 bus | Car and driver from your hotel |
| Films and shuttle | In the A ticket | Same |
| In the caves | Site guide, assigned group | Same site guide, same group rules |
| Before and after | You read up | Your own guide explains and answers questions |
| Rest of the day | You arrange it | Dunes, lake and night market planned |
Want the booking and the car handled? The private Mogao and Crescent Lake day starts with a guide-only option.
Check dates for the private Mogao and Crescent Lake dayHow do you get to the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center?
By taxi or Didi in about 20 to 30 minutes from the centre, or by bus for CNY 8 in about 40 minutes. Don't go to the cave cliff: every visit starts at the exhibition center.
Show the driver the Chinese name, 莫高窟数字展示中心. Dunhuang taxis charge CNY 5 for the first 2 km and CNY 1.8 per km after that in the daytime (Travel China Guide). From the railway station or the airport the ride is shorter, about 10 to 20 minutes, since both sit on the same side of town.
The public bus leaves from the gate of the Dunhuang Holiday Inn, costs CNY 8 and takes about 40 minutes; the last bus back leaves at 17:30. For the return by taxi, set up Didi before you go. Once at the exhibition center you don't need any transport: the official shuttle takes ticket holders about 15 km to the cliff and back.

What does the site guide at Mogao do?
Leads your group through the caves, unlocks each one, lights the murals with a torch and explains them. Every visitor gets one, with or without a tour.
The site guides are trained and employed at Mogao, and they are the only people who lead groups inside. A private tour guide comes with you to the exhibition center and meets you afterwards; inside, the site guide decides the route and the pace. A guest on the private Mogao day wrote that the caves "are well worth seeing - went round with a guide who worked on the site."
English groups form only at set times. A visitor on another tour wrote: "For English speakers I had to wait for an hour to gather other ex pats, but the tour was great with only a few people." Book an English session if one is offered for your date, and arrive on time for it.

What does a private Mogao tour add?
The booking in your name, a car from your hotel, a guide for the hours around the caves, and the rest of the day planned. It doesn't add caves, time inside or a better ticket.
Take the private Mogao and Crescent Lake day: about 3 hours at Mogao, then Mingsha Shan, the Crescent Lake and the Shazhou night market, roughly 10 hours in all. It comes in three versions: guide only, guide with car and driver, or guide, car and entry tickets. Lunch, the camel ride and special caves cost extra on all three, and an airport or station transfer costs CNY 200 to 500 per group on top.
What you are paying for is a person who knows Dunhuang and speaks your language all day. A guest in November 2025: "Guide was very kind and knowledgeable. Fully recommended."

Mogao in the morning, the dunes and the Crescent Lake later, then the night market. Pick guide only, guide and car, or the option with entry tickets.

For two people on a summer day with Mogao and the dunes, about CNY 820 in tickets and taxis, a little over $110. A private tour for the same day costs more per person.
A summer day for two, done yourself:
| Item | Two people | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Mogao A tickets | CNY 476 | 2 x CNY 238 |
| Taxis to Mogao and back | About CNY 60 to 100 | Meter or Didi |
| Mingsha Shan and Crescent Lake | CNY 220 | 2 x CNY 110, valid 3 days |
| Taxis to the dunes and back | About CNY 30 | 5 km each way |
| Total | About CNY 790 to 830 | Roughly $110 to $115 at about 7 yuan to the dollar |
Against that, the Mogao and Crescent Lake day with entry starts at $100 per person, with both tickets, a car and an English-speaking guide on its full option (check that the option you pick includes the tickets); the price per person rises for a couple. The tour costs more. You are buying a free morning instead of a booking session, a driver who waits, and someone to ask about the paintings.
When is a private Mogao tour worth it?
When the logistics would eat your day: no Chinese payment apps, a one-day stop, a family to steer, or a Gobi trip the same week.
- You can't pay in China yet. Booking needs WeChat Pay or Alipay. An operator pays for you.
- You have one day. Mogao in the morning and the dunes at sunset is easy with a car and tiring by taxi.
- You travel with kids or older relatives. Hotel pickup and a driver who waits matter more than the price.
- You want context. The site guide covers the caves; your own guide covers the Silk Road, the town and the food around them.
Skip the tour if your payment apps work, you have two days, and you like to read up before you go. You will see exactly the same caves.

Choosing your own sites? The customized private day pairs a local guide and car with your route; entry fees are paid in cash.
Check dates for the customized private dayHalf-day Mogao tour or a full day with the dunes?
A half day if Mogao is the only thing you want guided; a full day if you also want Mingsha Shan and the lake without booking a second ride.
The Mogao half-day tour takes 3 to 4 hours with hotel pickup, a minivan, a guide with headsets and water, from $209. It isn't marked private, and the listing caps the group at 15. You give your passport details at booking because the ticket is issued in your name.
One 4-star review is worth reading before you choose it: the guest felt the caves were rushed and that part of the time went on a souvenir shop selling hand-painted Buddhist art. Ask whether a shop stop is planned, and say no if you don't want it. A full private day such as the Mogao and Crescent Lake day leaves you more room to set the pace.

What mistakes do DIY visitors make at Mogao?
Going to the cave cliff instead of the exhibition center, booking with the wrong passport number, and arriving late for a timed slot.
- Wrong place. Maps sometimes send you to the cliff. Your visit starts at the Digital Exhibition Center, about 15 km away.
- Passport mismatch. A typo in the number or a different passport from the one you carry can stop you at the check.
- Late arrival. Be there 30 minutes before the slot. Groups leave on time.
- Booking a B ticket by mistake. On a busy day the system may offer only the emergency visit. Read the class before you pay.
- Big bags. Anything of 20 inches or more stays in storage at the exhibition center.
- Phone out in a cave. Photography is banned inside, and the guides do stop people.
The ticket classes, prices and booking steps are in the Mogao tickets guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a guide at the Mogao Caves?
No. A site guide comes with every ticket and leads your group through the caves. A private guide is optional and stays with you before and after the cave visit.
Is there an English tour at Mogao?
Yes, at set times only, and languages vary by date. Choose an English session on the booking screen if one is offered; if you are on a mixed tour you may wait for an English group to form.
How long does a Mogao visit take?
About 4 to 5 hours door to door from town: 30 minutes early at the Digital Exhibition Center, about 40 minutes of films, the shuttle, and 75 minutes to 2 hours in the caves.
Can a tour get me Mogao tickets when they are sold out?
No. Operators book on the same official system you do. If a listing promises a sold-out date or named caves, ask what ticket class they actually hold.
