Dunhuang's sights fall into three groups. Mogao and Mingsha Shan sit close to town, 25 km and 5 km away. Yumen Pass and the Yadan geopark lie 90 to 180 km out in the Gobi. The Yulin Caves and the Suoyang ruins are about 170 km east, near Guazhou.
Each group is a day. That is the whole logic of a Dunhuang itinerary, and it is why two days is the minimum we would plan.
The quick answer
Plan 2 full days: Mogao and Mingsha Shan on day one, Yumen Pass and Yadan on day two. With one day, do Mogao in the morning and the dunes at sunset. A third day adds the Yulin Caves and Suoyang, or Yangguan. For the wider Silk Road, Jiayuguan is about 2.5 hours away by train and Zhangye 4 to 4.5 hours.

How many days do you need in Dunhuang?
Two full days for most people, three if you love caves and ruins. One day only works for Mogao and the dunes.
| Plan | What you see | Driving | A tour that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Mogao, Mingsha Shan, Crescent Lake, night market | About 60 km | Private Mogao and Crescent Lake day |
| 2 days | Day 1 plus Yumen Pass, the Han wall and Yadan | About 350 km more | Yumen Pass and Yadan private |
| 3 days | Days 1 and 2 plus the Yulin Caves and Suoyang, or Yangguan | About 340 km more | 3-day private tour |
| 8 days | Dunhuang, Jiayuguan and Zhangye along the Hexi Corridor | Train or car between towns | 8-day Silk Road trip |
Have one day? Mogao in the morning, the dunes and lake in the afternoon, the night market after dark.

Mogao in the morning, lunch in town, Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Lake from late afternoon to sunset, then the Shazhou night market.
- Morning: book the earliest Mogao slot you can get. Allow 4 to 5 hours door to door.
- Lunch: back in town. Rest out of the midday heat in summer.
- Late afternoon: Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Lake, 5 km south. Climb a dune or take a camel ride.
- Sunset: around 20:30 to 21:00 in summer, earlier in spring and autumn.
- Evening: the Shazhou night market for dinner.
This is exactly the route of the private Mogao and Crescent Lake day, about 10 hours, and of the day with both entry fees included. The dunes ticket is valid for 3 days, so a dune you miss at sunset can wait for the next morning.

What is the best 2-day Dunhuang itinerary?
Day one Mogao and the dunes, day two the Gobi: Yumen Pass, the Han wall and Yadan. Book the Mogao slot first and fit the Gobi day around it.
Mogao tickets are the only hard constraint in town: timed, real-name and capped. Lock in your Mogao date as soon as tickets open, then put the Gobi on the other day. The Gobi day runs 6 to 8 hours on the private Yumen Pass and Yadan tour, or 12 hours if you add Yangguan on the small group day.
Arriving by plane in the morning? Use the afternoon for Mingsha Shan and the lake, which needs nothing booked, and keep both full days for Mogao and the Gobi. Details in the Yumen Pass and Yadan guide.

Day two sorted: Yumen Pass, the Han wall and the Yadan yardangs in a private car, with entry and both park buses included.

The Yulin Caves and the Suoyang ruins to the east, or Yangguan to the southwest. Yulin is the pick if Mogao left you wanting more caves.
The Yulin Caves sit in a river gorge about 170 km from Dunhuang, in Guazhou county, with murals in the same tradition as Mogao and far fewer visitors. Suoyang is a ruined Silk Road city of earthen walls standing in the Gobi nearby. Together they make a long but quiet day.
The 3-day private tour is built this way: day one Yangguan, Yumen Pass and the Han wall; day two Mogao and Mingsha Shan; day three Yulin and Suoyang. It includes a guide, transport and lunch each day, from $745, with pickup at the airport arrival hall and an 8:30 start. Hotels aren't included, and entry fees aren't in its list of inclusions, so ask about them.

Three private days with lunch each day: both Han passes, Mogao and the dunes, then the Yulin Caves.

Fly into Dunhuang Mogao airport (DNH) or take a train to Dunhuang station. High-speed trains on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang line stop at Liuyuan, about 2 hours by road from town.
Both the airport and the railway station sit close to the Mogao Digital Exhibition Center, 10 to 20 minutes by taxi. Lanzhou to Dunhuang takes about 8.5 hours by train (China Highlights). In town, taxis start at CNY 5, and most visitors use Didi or a tour car for the outlying sites.
Check your entry rules early: many European passports, plus UK, Canadian and Australian ones, get 30 days visa-free until the end of 2026, and US citizens still need a visa or a transit route. See the visa-free entry post.

How do you add Jiayuguan and Zhangye?
By train: Jiayuguan is about 2.5 hours from Dunhuang and Zhangye 4 to 4.5 hours. Give each at least a day.
Dunhuang is the western end of the Hexi Corridor, the strip of oases that carried the Silk Road through Gansu. Going east, Jiayuguan has the Ming fort at the western end of the Ming Great Wall, and Zhangye has the striped Danxia hills. Zhangye to Jiayuguan is about 1.5 hours by train, Zhangye to Lanzhou 4 to 4.5 hours.
The 8-day Silk Road trip does the whole corridor privately: Mogao, the Dunhuang Theater, Yumen Pass, Mingsha Shan, the White Horse Pagoda, the Yulin Grotto and Suoyang, then Jiayuguan and the Zhangye Danxia. It includes 7 nights of hotels and all meals, from $2,499 per person.

Eight private days from Dunhuang to Zhangye with hotels and all meals: the caves, the passes, the fort and the Danxia hills.

Mogao in the morning, the dunes in the late afternoon, the Gobi on a separate full day. Don't try to stack Mogao and Yadan.
- Mogao first because the slots are fixed and the morning ones are the calmest.
- Dunes late because the sand is hot by midday in summer. A 4-star guest on a summer Mogao and dunes day said the dunes are better in the afternoon, once the sun is low.
- The Gobi alone because Yadan is 160 to 180 km away. Mogao plus Yadan in one day is about 7 hours of driving and caves together, with no time to look at either.
- Evenings free for the night market or the Silk Road show at the Dunhuang Theater, included on the Mogao, dunes and show day.

How many days do you need in winter?
The same two days. Light is shorter and nights are cold, but the sites are quiet and cheaper.
From December to March, Mogao opens 09:00 to 17:30 and its regular ticket drops to CNY 140 for 10 caves; Mingsha Shan drops to CNY 55. January lows average about -15 °C, highs about -1 °C. Start the Gobi day early, because the light goes by 18:00. More in the best time to visit guide and Dunhuang in winter.
Frequently asked questions
Is one day in Dunhuang enough?
For Mogao and the dunes, yes, just. You won't see Yumen Pass or Yadan, which need a full day of their own.
Can I do Mogao and Yadan in one day?
Not well. Mogao takes 4 to 5 hours door to door and Yadan is 160 to 180 km away. Put them on separate days.
Do I need a car in Dunhuang?
Not for Mogao and the dunes: taxis and buses work. For Yumen Pass, Yadan or the Yulin Caves you need a tour or a chartered car.
How far is Zhangye from Dunhuang?
About 4 to 4.5 hours by train. Jiayuguan is on the way, about 2.5 hours from Dunhuang.
